I enjoy photographing nature and creating oyster shell nativity scenes. I became interested in photography as a teenager and was motivated by a local photographer to continue exploring. I like to make the ordinary look unique with cropping, repetition and using black and white tones. I capture a wide range of subjects, from flowers to fire hydrants. Some of my most memorable photography adventures involved taking my dog Baron on road trips in the old Ford Ranger, hoping to avoid snakes and folks wielding shotguns.
My oyster shell nativity scenes and nativity ornaments are inspired by God’s magnificent creation. The shells, Spanish moss, and driftwood are gathered from my most favorite places – Edisto Beach, Hunting Island and Lands End. These were regular childhood destinations and remain very special locations. I also make nativity ornaments using cockle shells. The most gratifying and challenging part of the nativity scene process is selecting expressive shells that complement each other and pairing them with a background, whether a pen shell or driftwood, that enhances the piece.
I have also been blessed to have a wonderfully encouraging husband. Lee is a polite critic (and wonderful artist) who inspires me not to yield to disappointment and to strive to present a unique perspective in my work.
